Works on Canvas

Over the years works on canvas in oils or acrylics are subject to deterioration due to the effects of damp which causes cracking and lifting of the paint layer and the use of poor quality varnishes which become yellow and darken with age and pollution such as smoke.  Accidental damage in the form of holes and tears may have occurred which spoil and devalue the artwork.

Lifting and cracking paint is generally treated from the back of the canvas by relining a new linen canvas on the back of the old canvas forming a bond with a compound of bees wax and resin.  This provides a moisture-proof bond between paint, primer and canvas.  Once holes are repaired and the paint layer is safe further cleaning and retouching can be undertaken.

Varnish is important on a painting as it provides a protective barrier between the painting and the atmosphere.  In some instances harmful synthetic varnishes have been used which discolour to the extent that the image is virtually obscured.  It is possible in most cases to remove the varnish layer leaving the paint colours as fresh as the artist left them.  Retouching is carefully done to replace damage (only with owner’s knowledge and agreement) before the fresh artwork is re-varnished with conservation quality reversible varnish.
