Conservation Framing

“To be or not to be …………… acid free?”

The term “acid free” has been heard for a number of years, yet there are still many who are unclear what it means.  Up until about twenty years ago, framing materials (and art materials) contained acid which came from the lignin in the wood pulp used to make mount boards and backing boards.  This results in yellowing of the boards and, worse still, transfer of the acidity to the artwork culminating in acid burn, the formation of fox marks and finally destruction of the paper.  Nowadays completely acid free framing materials are available which preserve the artwork within the frame for many years to come.

At Applecross Framing & Fine Art we use the highest quality acid free mat boards
and backing and can advise you on your best options to conserve your special original artworks.

Ultra violet rays

The fierce rays of the sun in Western Australia can rapidly fade your original art, photographs, prints and documents.  In extreme cases images may be lost for ever.  This can be prevented by framing with UV block glass which blocks out almost 100% of the harmful rays.  Conservation quality glass has the same appearance as standard clear glass and the benefit far outweighs the slightly higher initial cost.
